The small penguins in Adélie Land are hungry and would
like their parents to feed them some fish. Adélie Land is in the Antarctic
territory, where it is very cold and the earth is covered with thick ice. One
after another, the parents go into the sea to catch fish. From there, they
carry the fish in their beaks back to the nest. A penguin can only carry up to
3 fish at the same time, any more would slip out of his beak.
As the penguin
children are really very hungry and always have to wait until their parents
come home with the fish, they sometimes wander into a neighbouring nest and
hope they’ll get something to eat there too.
During that time, all penguins have to be very careful. No little penguin should be on his own at home when a killer whale or a leopard seal turns up.
Aim of the Game:
The little penguins need 7 fish to get full. Which
parents will manage that first?
Game Preparation:
Each player looks for a nest and the
corresponding penguin family. The nests are placed at the edge of the water.
One adult penguin from each family
is put in the water; the rest of the
family is left in the nest.
The stack of chance cards is mixed and placed face
down in the centre of the water. The fish are distributed in the sea around the
stack of cards.
How to Play:
The youngest player begins the game by
throwing the dice and he then moves the penguins according to the motif which
comes up on the dice.
A parent penguin goes into the
sea or comes back to the nest from the sea to set down the fish (s)he has
caught.
A parent penguin in the water,
catches a fish and holds it with his/her beak. (S)he can only hold 3
fish in his/her beak at a time however! The catch
may not be passed on to the other parent
penguin however.
One parent penguin in the water catches
two fish and holds them in his/her beak.
A penguin child goes into any
neighbouring nest or comes out of one and goes home. If there are any fish in
the nest there, he takes one of them
and goes off with it.
The chance card is drawn and then laid
face down under the stack again.
Chance cards:
A penguin swimming in the water catches a fish and
returns to the nest or a penguin sitting in the nest may go into the water and
catch a fish there but he must then stay in the water.
A penguin swimming in the water catches two fish and
returns to the nest or a penguin sitting in the nest may go into the water and
catch two fish there but he must then stay in the water.
A killer whale or a leopard seal comes
close to the penguins. In fright, the penguins lose all the fish they caught in
the sea. If the penguin children are on their own at home, a parent fish jumps
back quickly into the nest leaving the fish behind him/her.
The winner is the first to collect 7 fish in the nest!
Have a lot of
fun with this exciting game of catching fish in the polar sea!
